Meta Platforms Inc. is reportedly in talks to make a massive investment worth more than US$10 billion or Rp162.58 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp16,258 per US dollar) in artificial intelligence (AI) startup Scale AI. Reporting from Bloomberg, Sunday (8/6/2025), based on sources familiar with the matter, the funding exceeding US$10 billion could be one of the largest fundings in the history of a private company. However, the agreement is not final and could still change. Meanwhile, representatives from Scale have not commented, while Meta declined to respond. For information, Scale AI is a startup that focuses on developing AI and provides data labeling services to help companies train machine learning models. The company has clients that include Microsoft Corp and OpenAI. Meanwhile, Scale was last assessed to have a valuation of around US$14 billion in 2024 in a funding round supported by Meta and Microsoft. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Scale was in talks for a tender offer that could value it at $25 billion. If completed, it would be Meta’s largest external AI investment to date. Meta Platforms, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, has relied more on internal research and open development strategies to advance its AI technology. Other major tech companies have made major investments, with Microsoft investing more than $13 billion in OpenAI, while Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc. have each invested billions in OpenAI competitor Anthropic. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made AI a top priority for the company. In January, Zuckerberg said Meta would spend up to $65 billion on AI projects this year.
