Bambang Soesatyo (Bamsoet), a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives and a lecturer at the Postgraduate Program in Law at Borobudur University, has emphasized that the trade war between the United States and China has complex implications for Indonesia. These include a decline in export volumes, fluctuations in exchange rates, and a decrease in the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the international market. He pointed out that the proposed 32% increase in import tariffs on Indonesian products entering the U.S. adds further pressure on the labor-intensive export sector, which has traditionally been a cornerstone of Indonesia's economy. However, with the right strategies—such as market diversification, enhancing competitiveness through innovation and regulatory reforms, and engaging in smart economic diplomacy—Indonesia has the potential to mitigate these negative impacts and even achieve economic gains. "The trade conflict between the United States and China, along with the proposed increase in import tariffs on goods from Indonesia to the U.S., poses a significant challenge to Indonesia's economy. While there are opportunities to fill the void left by China in the global market, Indonesia must be prepared to confront the associated negative effects," Bamsoet stated in a press release on Sunday, April 13, 2025. "A strategic and proactive approach is crucial for Indonesia not only to survive but also to thrive in an increasingly complex global trade environment," he added during a public lecture for the Postgraduate Program in Economics at Borobudur University in Jakarta on Saturday, April 12. Bamsoet further explained that in the context of the trade war, Indonesia should seize the opportunity presented by shifts in global trade flows. As tariffs on Chinese goods rise, some U.S. companies are seeking alternatives to avoid higher costs. With its abundant natural resources, Indonesia is well-positioned to supply essential goods to the United States, ranging from agricultural products and plantation goods to consumer items.
