Roche World Diabetes Day 2024: Monitor Your Glucose Levels To Prevent Diabetes Complications

Monday, 18 Nov 2024

The rising prevalence of diabetes has made it a chronic disease with the third highest mortality rate in Indonesia. According to the Ministry of Health, diabetes cases in Indonesia are expected to reach 28.5 million by 2045. However, the International Diabetes Federation reports that 74% of people living with diabetes are undiagnosed.

Therefore, educating the public about diabetes and the importance of diabetes management is crucial. This topic is the main focus of World Diabetes Day 2024, organized by Roche Indonesia today.

This event is Roche's initiative to raise awareness about the importance of diabetes prevention, early detection, and proactive management through self-glucose monitoring.

The World Diabetes Day celebration began with a healthy walk, attended by over 150 participants from the CEO Runner Community and Ibu Hebat. Participants gained knowledge about diabetes through a panel discussion titled "Living Healthy with Diabetes," led by specialist doctors. They also had the opportunity to check their blood sugar levels, and those with high results were offered free HbA1C tests in collaboration with Prodia.

“To improve healthcare services in Indonesia, we are implementing a health transformation program focused on six main pillars. One of our priorities is to support primary care for diabetes. This effort starts with health promotion aimed at educating and empowering the community to be more aware of the importance of diabetes prevention and control.

Additionally, we are prioritizing early detection programs that can be conducted through Posyandu and Puskesmas. It is expected that every resident aged 15 and above undergoes early detection at least once a year. For those already ill, regular check-ups should be done monthly. To ensure this program runs effectively, we need collaboration with various partners who care about health.

This collaboration includes educating the community, conducting early detection, and enhancing the capacity of healthcare workers to provide the best services, said Dr. Tiersa Vera Junita, a representative from the Directorate of Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control (P2PTM) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, who opened Roche World Diabetes Day.

Lee Poh Seng, Director of the Diagnostics Division at PT Roche Indonesia, stated, "Roche recognizes the importance of screening and early detection in maintaining health and preventing disease. The rising prevalence of diabetes in Indonesia requires access to quality healthcare services. Self-monitoring of glucose is crucial for proactive diabetes management, helping individuals manage their condition. World Diabetes Day is an opportunity for everyone to show solidarity with those living with diabetes daily and to take action to raise awareness, educate the public, and improve access to healthcare services."

The Importance of Early Detection and Self-Monitoring of Glucose

"The high prevalence of diabetes in Indonesia is caused by several factors, including a lack of knowledge about diabetes, unhealthy lifestyles, and insufficient physical activity. Many people with diabetes are unaware of their condition, far outnumbering those who have been diagnosed.

Therefore, self-monitoring of blood glucose is a vital component in reducing the risk of diabetes complications and should be complemented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, such as regular exercise."
