The Active Lifestyle Is Gaining Popularity Among The Indonesian Community

Wednesday, 22 Jan 2025

Dr. Antonius Andi Kurniawan, a specialist in sports medicine at Pondok Indah-Bintaro Hospital, observes that an increasing number of Indonesians are embracing an active lifestyle. He asserts that this shift in lifestyle will yield numerous health benefits. "This year, I believe the trend of active living is on the rise. If we look at running events, the number of participants is growing. Additionally, at Gelora Bung Karno, we see more people walking, especially in Jakarta," Dr. Andi stated, as reported by Antara on Friday, January 17, 2025.

Dr. Andi suggests that the growing trend of active living may be influenced by the extensive educational efforts on social media. The presence of numerous influencers promoting fitness content encourages the public, particularly the youth, to engage with and adopt the behaviors advocated by these influencers.

"Younger individuals tend to favor social media, making it easier for them to lead active lives. This is my assumption, as I do not yet have the data to support it," he remarked. He noted that the community appears to enjoy light physical activities, such as walking around the GBK area or cycling during the Car Free Day events held every weekend. However, he emphasizes that to further enhance active lifestyles, the quality and utility of various facilities must be improved.

For instance, pedestrian sidewalks should be more suitable and comfortable for use, similar to those found in Singapore or Europe. He indicated that such improvements could also alleviate the burden on BPJS concerning chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, which are increasingly prevalent. "I hope the trend of active living continues to rise, accompanied by appropriate and balanced exercise to prevent injuries or mere validation on social media. I hope that by 2025, the situation will be different," Dr. Andi concluded. Previously, Stanford University conducted a study in 2017 that mapped physical activity across 111 countries, including Indonesia.
