Doctors Advise Against Going To Sleep Immediately After Eating Sahur

Thursday, 13 Mar 2025

Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Andhika Respati advises against sleeping immediately after eating sahur, because it can disrupt digestion.

"After eating, it takes time to digest our food. So if we sleep immediately (after sahur) it is feared that it will disrupt digestion," said Dr. Andhika when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta, Monday.

In addition to digestive disorders, he said, sleeping after eating can trigger individuals who have a history of GERD. This is because of increased pressure in the stomach which can cause stomach acid to rise into the esophagus.

Meanwhile, to meet the eight-hour sleep requirement during Ramadan, he suggests implementing the same or routine rest pattern.

He gave an example, after performing the Tarawih prayer at around 20.00 or 20.30 you can immediately rest.

"So you should sleep at 21.00 if you can get used to it, that's impossible during the fasting month. So you sleep at 21.00, wake up at 3 in the morning (to prepare to cook sahur). It's still safe, especially if you wake up at 4 in the morning if you don't cook," he explained again.

However, if during those times you still don't get enough sleep, you can take a nap to be more refreshed in your activities.

Although a nap cannot replace a night's sleep, it is expected to reduce drowsiness.

"So a nap is not designed to replace a night's sleep," he explained.

As a replacement for lack of sleep, he recommends maximizing sleep the next day and increasing nutritional intake so that the body can recover well from lack of sleep.
