Gout In Teenagers Triggered By Bad Lifestyle

Tuesday, 03 Jun 2025

The modern instant lifestyle and unbalanced diet are now starting to have a serious impact on the health of teenagers. One of the problems that is starting to be found is the increase in cases of gout at a young age. The disease that was once considered a complaint of the elderly is no longer looking at age. The habit of consuming fast food, artificially sweetened drinks, and lack of physical activity are the main triggers for the emergence of this disease at an early age.

This phenomenon was a concern in the Health Dialogue broadcast that took place at the Pro 2 RRI Singaraja Guard Post (5/21/25). In the session, dr. Nyoman Budi Wirananda Setiawan revealed that many teenagers have now unknowingly adopted a lifestyle that increases the risk of gout.

"Teenagers are now susceptible to gout because their consumption patterns are high in purines and artificial sugar," he said.

He explained further that the consumption of carbonated drinks, offal, red meat, and artificially sweetened foods and drinks are the main factors that cause increased uric acid levels in the body. In addition, lack of physical activity also worsens the condition because the body has difficulty removing excess substances.

The initial symptoms usually felt by adolescent sufferers, said Dr. Budi, are characterized by pain in the joints. He even added that when conducting examinations during social service activities, he found a number of adolescents complaining of unusual joint pain, where the most common parts found were in the elbow and ankle joints.

"Usually it starts by attacking the joints of the big toe, but it is possible that it also appears in between other joints. The most I find is in the elbow or ankle joints," he said in the broadcast.

In closing, Dr. Budi appealed to adolescents to start paying attention to their diet and increasing physical activity. According to him, early prevention is very important so that productive age is not disturbed by this disease that can actually be controlled.
