Thursday, 05 Jun 2025

Collaboration between Bicara Udara and the Pedestrian Coalition (KOPEKA) in collaboration with the Clean Mobility Collective South East Asia (CMC SEA) launched the public campaign “Life in a Bubble” to voice the importance of awareness of the right to clean air.

The campaign was held along Jalan Sudirman-Thamrin during Car Free Day on Sunday (1/6). The members carried out the campaign by carrying striking visuals in the form of transparent bubbles as a symbol of the difference in protection between a handful of people and the majority of society against air pollution.

“There must be concrete action to control chronic air pollution that occurs in Jabodetabek and other big cities, for the sake of fresh air for all," said KOPEKA representative Amalia S. Bendang in an official statement in Jakarta, Monday.

Amalia explained that “Life in a Bubble” is a campaign pioneered by 350 Pilipinas in Manila, Philippines as an invitation to realize that clean air is a basic right that must be guaranteed, not just for a handful of people.

In addition, air pollution is not only displayed in scientific data or reports but also the reality faced by society every day, especially the most vulnerable groups in society.

Through the implementation of the campaign in Jakarta, the collaborators encouraged the community and government to take real action to reduce air pollution and protect public health. The activity also became an initial step to urge the strengthening of science-based policies and data transparency related to air quality.

He said that the right to fresh air for all has been guaranteed through Article 28 letter h of the 1945 Constitution as part of the human right to obtain a good and healthy environment, its existence must be guaranteed.

"The 'Life in a Bubble' campaign is expected to be able to mobilize stakeholders, especially the government, supported by community participation and the private sector according to their respective competencies and capacities," he said.

Biru Voices Ambassadors 2024, namely Aprila Majid and Lisa Anggraeny, expressed their concerns about air pollution through this event.

"Through this campaign, as mothers, we can imagine that all this time we have tried to build 'bubbles' to protect our children from air pollution, for example by limiting activities at home," said Aprila.

Lisa also hopes that children can breathe freely and freely without having to have these bubbles.

"It is hoped that this symbolic action can trigger a greater public push for the government to listen to the voice of the community and adopt air quality standards that truly protect public health, because clean air is a right for all people," said Lisa.
