Online Lifestyle Makes Wallet Leak Amidst Work Crisis

Monday, 23 Jun 2025

The phenomenon of 'money is getting harder to find but easy to spend' is increasingly felt in Indonesian society. The condition can be seen from a number of indicators such as limited employment opportunities but increasing expenditure.

Executive Director of the Center of Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS) Bhima Yudhistira said that one of the main causes of this phenomenon is increasingly felt in modern society because of the increasingly consumptive lifestyle.

"So indeed our society is increasingly moving towards a consumptive society, not a productive society. This means that their income is not much, especially in the midst of layoffs, they are willing to borrow money through pinjol or paylater to meet their lifestyle," said Bhima to detikcom, Wednesday (6/18/2025).

This condition is further exacerbated by technological developments such as social media which influence people's lifestyles. Plus the ease of shopping online makes these consumer products or goods easier to reach.

"So many people are FOMO too, many people follow trends and social media creates a consumerist class. The problem is there, so young people today are encouraged to be more consumptive than productive," said Bhima.

"With the development of existing technology, the internet is getting faster but shopping for unnecessary or non-essential goods is getting higher and higher. Meanwhile, the jobs created are getting lower and lower," he added.
