Maintaining Health In Old Age, Key To Independence And Better Quality Of Life

Tuesday, 24 Jun 2025

Entering old age (elderly) does not mean having to give up on declining physical conditions. In fact, the elderly period can be a period of life that remains active and of quality, as long as health is maintained properly.

This was conveyed by Dr. Atin Suhesti in her presentation in front of the mothers of the Indonesian Journalist Family Association (IKWI) of Central Java Province, at the Press Building, Jalan Trilomba Juang 10, Mugas, Semarang, Friday 6/20.

In the presentation entitled "Staying Healthy and Fit in Old Age", Dr. Atin explained that maintaining health in old age is very important because it is directly related to quality of life, the ability to remain independent, and prevention of various diseases that commonly occur in the elderly.

"Getting old is certain, but being healthy in old age is a choice. We can stay active and fit, as long as we are willing to implement a healthy lifestyle from an early age," she said.

In the presentation session, Atin explained three main things that are the key to fitness in old age. First, being active and exercising. Regular physical activity has been proven to maintain muscle strength, flexibility, and mental health.

"Walking, light exercise, or just moving around at home is enough, as long as it is done routinely," he said.

Second, maintain ideal body weight. Stable body weight that is in accordance with height can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Third, a healthy diet, and drinking enough water. A balanced nutritious diet is very important for maintaining endurance. "In addition, the elderly are also susceptible to dehydration, so fluid needs must be met every day," he added.

Routine Check-ups

Doctor Atin also emphasized that regular check-ups are an important step that is often overlooked. This examination is useful for early detection of various diseases, prevention of complications that can be more serious, monitoring treatment to be more effective, counseling on a healthy lifestyle, and maintaining the mental health of the elderly.

"Routine check-ups are not only for sick people, but also for those who want to stay healthy longer," he explained.

ccording to him, the government has now launched the Free Health Check (CKG) program, which aims to provide early detection services to the entire community, including the elderly. This service includes checking blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and general health consultations.

"This program is free and open to all, so don't hesitate to take advantage of it. Prevention is better than cure," said Atin.
