The Governor of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul of management practices to enhance the quality of services and safety for both trekking and non-trekking tourists in the Gunung Rinjani area. "This is a pivotal moment for us to improve; whatever has happened in the past is in the past, and moving forward, we aim to do better. People must have confidence that when they come to Rinjani, they will be safe," stated Iqbal as reported by Antara on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Iqbal mentioned that there are three fundamental aspects being prepared by the local government in collaboration with stakeholders to ensure a safe and comfortable tourism experience at Gunung Rinjani: the establishment of a rescue team, the installation of signage, and the placement of safety equipment near the summit of Gunung Rinjani. From July 16 to 20, 2025, vertical rescue evacuation training will be conducted in Sembalun District, East Lombok Regency. A total of 22 individuals will participate in this training to assist tourists who may encounter emergency situations while visiting Gunung Rinjani. Vertical rescue, or evakuasi penyelamatan vertikal, is a technique used to transfer victims from a low point (the base of a ravine) to a higher location, or vice versa, in steep terrain. "A total of 22 individuals participated in the training, but we certified 10 of them to international standards for conducting vertical rescue," stated Iqbal. Furthermore, he mentioned that signage would be installed from the very beginning of the climbing entrance all the way to the summit of Mount Rinjani. The signs will contain various information and guidance beneficial to tourists. The initiative to procure these signs is being carried out by a local brand that provides a range of equipment and gear for outdoor activities, such as camping and mountain climbing. Various safety equipment that meets standards will be promptly purchased to be placed at the emergency post near the summit of Mount Rinjani, facilitating the victim evacuation process. "If there is a need for rescue equipment, it will not be transported from the bottom to the top, which is a considerable distance, but rather from the top to the bottom, thus expediting the rescue process," Iqbal concluded. Previously, several accident incidents occurred on Mount Rinjani. A tourist from Brazil, Jualiana (26), tragically lost her life after falling into the crater of Mount Rinjani. Meanwhile, a climber from Switzerland, Benedikt Emmenegger (46), fell while climbing from Plawangan Sembalun towards Segara Anak. He survived but sustained broken bones and facial bruises.
