Lifebuoy Has Been Helping Parents Keep Their Kids Safe From Germs For 90 Years

Monday, 19 Aug 2024

For 90 years, Lifebuoy has been a trusted partner for Indonesian families, helping parents protect their children's health so they can chase their dreams. To celebrate this milestone, Lifebuoy has released a short film titled “90 Years of Protecting Indonesian Children to Achieve Their Dreams,” featuring inspiring figures like Susy Susanti, the gold medalist from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and Nicky Clara, a Disability Womenpreneur advocating for justice for people with disabilities. Alongside the film launch, Lifebuoy is ramping up its Handwashing with Soap (CTPS) education through the Lifebuoy School Preparedness Program, nurturing young doctors to become future health heroes. Erfan Hidayat, Head of Skin Cleansing at Unilever Indonesia, shared, “90 years is no small feat for Lifebuoy in fulfilling its purpose: to be a family friend in Indonesia, protecting against germs and keeping kids healthy. We deeply appreciate the trust parents have placed in us; this meaningful journey strengthens our commitment to safeguarding the health of Indonesian children so they can continue to dream big and achieve their goals.” There’s a strong hope for the next generation to dream boldly and innovate for a better future. However, a child’s courage to start and nurture their dreams must begin with good health. Prof. Dr. dr. Hinky Hindra Irawan Satari, Sp.A (K), M. TropPaed., explained, “If health isn’t maintained, children become more susceptible to illnesses, hindering their growth and ability to pursue their dreams. Currently, 27.84% of school-aged children face health issues like diarrhea or pneumonia, which disrupt their daily lives, including attending school.”

If not addressed, many dreams of Indonesian children could fade away because they often have to miss school. Parents play a crucial role in preventing these issues by encouraging healthy habits, especially handwashing, which is the first step in protecting against infectious diseases after vaccinations. Unfortunately, only 46% of school-aged children practice proper handwashing. Recent CDC data shows that good hand hygiene can reduce the risk of diarrhea by 23-40% and respiratory illnesses like pneumonia by 16-21%, as noted by Prof. Hinky. Erfan added, “Given these facts, Lifebuoy is committed to providing quality products that meet the needs of Indonesian families while consistently educating about handwashing during 5 Key Moments through the Lifebuoy School Preparedness Program, which has benefited 15 million children across Indonesia since 2015. This year, we aim to reach 1 million children, hoping that cleaner, protected hands will help safeguard their health so they can achieve their dreams.” Speaking of dreams, parental support is incredibly important. To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Lifebuoy is honoring the strength of parents in protecting their children's health and dreams with a short film titled ‘90 Years of Protecting Indonesian Children’s Dreams.’ The film features inspiring figures like Susy Susanti, Nicky Clara, and Ellyas Pical, who achieved their dreams thanks to their loving parents. Susy Susanti shared, “I believe that parental support is a vital foundation for a child to dare to dream and make it happen. Once, after losing a match, my mom told me, ‘Falling and getting back up is normal; this process is what you’ll remember forever.’”
