The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has been remarkably rapid in recent years, ushering the world into a more sophisticated era of automation. This progress has been driven by increasingly sophisticated algorithms, enhanced computational capacity, and an abundance of data. In light of these technological developments, to what extent is Indonesia leveraging them? AI expert and founder of the Artificial Intelligence Implementation Initiative (AI3), Sony Subrata, believes that Indonesia requires a more creative and targeted strategy for AI implementation. "AI technology is evolving at an extraordinary pace. New algorithmic models are continually emerging, computational power is growing stronger, and data is becoming more plentiful. However, how can we bridge the widening gap?" Sony Subrata stated to reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 5. He argues that Indonesia cannot merely strive to catch up with advanced nations that have already made significant strides in AI development. Instead, Indonesia must identify its own strategic advantages within the global AI ecosystem. "We cannot simply attempt to follow the lead of major companies that are far ahead, such as NVIDIA in the semiconductor industry or OpenAI with its latest AI models like GPT-4 Turbo and O3 Mini," he elaborated. Furthermore, he noted that China is rapidly accelerating innovation with initiatives like DeepSeek and Qwen from Alibaba. "With competition becoming increasingly fierce, Indonesia must promptly define its role within this ecosystem," he explained. Beyond mere technological advancement, AI has the potential to be a key driver of Indonesia's economic growth. If implemented with the right strategy, AI could help achieve an economic growth target of 8 percent per year or more. Sony emphasized that AI is not solely about mastering technology, but also about how to utilize it for national interests. Indonesia's success in the AI domain heavily relies on close collaboration among the government, academia, and industry.
