Google Chat Introduces Group Renaming Feature And 'Board' Tab

Tuesday, 18 Feb 2025

Google Chat has introduced an update that allows users to rename group chats and add a 'board' tab for better organization of information.

Previously, group names in Google Chat displayed only a list of member names without any editing options. Now, users can assign custom names to both existing and newly created group conversations.

This name will be visible to all members in the chat and will remain private. Additionally, Google has introduced a 'board' tab that will appear alongside the chat.

This feature acts as a 'virtual bulletin board,' enabling users to pin messages, links, and important files. With the assistance of AI Gemini, users can quickly locate and add relevant resources.

In terms of access, all users can manage content on the board, except in announcement rooms, where only managers have editing rights. Room managers can also restrict or expand access permissions as needed

According to 9To5Google, as of Saturday, February 15, 2025, Google aims for this feature to serve various purposes, such as:

- Assisting project managers in organizing and sharing team resources.

- Providing quick access to important information for team members.

- Accelerating the onboarding process for new members with available resources.

This feature is set to be rolled out in the coming weeks for all Google Workspace users, including individual customers and personal Google accounts.
