Ministry Of Communication And Digital Synchronizes Between Ministries/Institutions Regarding Age Restrictions On Social Media Access

Saturday, 22 Mar 2025

Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid said that currently her party is synchronizing between ministries/institutions (K/L) regarding the planned regulation on restricting access to social media use based on age.

She said that Kemkomdigi is currently synchronizing the draft regulation with the Ministry of State Secretariat and the Ministry of Law.

"Yes, let's just pray that this is currently being synchronized with the State Secretariat and the Ministry of Law so the process is currently being synchronized and harmonized," said Meutya when met in an intercept interview at the Kemkomdigi Office, Central Jakarta on Tuesday.

Meutya emphasized that the process of drafting the regulation on the use of social media for children is transparent and involves various parties, including social media platform providers.

"They were invited, because we invited all of them and we involved others," she said.

It is known that Meutya stated that the regulation on restricting the use of social media is needed to protect children from the risk of exposure to negative content in the digital space.

Because the threat of crime against children in cyberspace is now increasingly complex, the government is preparing regulations to improve child protection in the digital space.

The Minister of Communication and Digital said that the rules on restrictions on the use of social media for children will be drafted referring to the law on information and electronic transactions (ITE). "Regarding restrictions on social media for children, we are still studying it further in the draft government regulation or perhaps a new law that is also being discussed," said Meutya.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital is currently still collecting input from related parties regarding the drafting of regulations on the use of social media for children.

Meutya said that the government will, among others, ask for input from the House of Representatives (DPR), education groups, parents, and child observers regarding the preparation of the draft regulation.

"We will accept all input carefully and wisely, because this is not something that can be decided in a hurry," she said.
