Technology company Qualcomm has officially acquired the artificial intelligence (AI) division of Vietnamese startup VinAI. The nominal acquisition was not disclosed but this is Qualcomm's ongoing expansion step to enter and strengthen itself as one of the AI ??players. VinAI was founded by former DeepMind research scientist Hung Bui by developing various generative AI technologies, including computer vision algorithms and language models. "This acquisition underscores our commitment to dedicating the necessary resources to R&D that makes us a driving force behind the next wave of AI innovation," said Qualcomm SVP of Engineering Jilei Hou in a press release, Wednesday. Jilei further said, "By bringing in high-caliber talent from VinAI, we strengthen our ability to provide cutting-edge AI solutions that will benefit various industries and consumers." VinAI, which Bui started in 2019, initially focused on AI-powered automotive products, but also conducts high-level AI research. Backed by Vietnamese conglomerate VinGroup, the company creates solutions such as in-cabin monitoring, security and “smart parking” systems for automakers and customers in other verticals. Bui expects VinAI to contribute to a number of Qualcomm product families, including software and chips for smartphones, PCs and vehicles. “Our team’s expertise in generative AI and machine learning will help accelerate the development of innovative solutions that can transform the way we live and work,” Hung Bui said in a statement.
