The government is preparing a program to provide fixed internet access of up to 100 Mbps which is prioritized for penetration in areas without fiber optic networks or blank spots, including schools, health centers, and village offices. Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid explained that this step is part of the acceleration of national digital equality as mandated by President Prabowo Subianto. Meutya emphasized that digital connectivity is an important foundation in realizing people's economic growth. "As we all know, in his inauguration speech, the President repeatedly conveyed the importance of digitalization to improve people's economic lives," said Meutya in Jakarta, Saturday. In the 100 Mbps internet provision program, the government has prepared a new spectrum that will be allocated transparently to fixed network providers. The network model that will be implemented is open access, meaning that permit holders are required to open their infrastructure for joint use by other telecommunications providers. This effort aims to pave the way for the provision of high-speed fixed internet services in areas that have not been reached by fiber optic networks, especially for public facilities such as schools, health service centers, village offices, and households. According to data from the Directorate General of Digital Infrastructure of the Ministry of Communication and Digital, as many as 86 percent of schools (190,000 units) still do not have fixed internet access. In addition, 75 percent of Community Health Centers (7,800 units) are not yet properly connected, 32,000 village offices are still in the blank spot zone, and fixed broadband penetration has only reached 21.31 percent of households in Indonesia. "This is our step in ensuring that every spectrum policy not only prioritizes regulatory aspects, but also opens up the widest possible space for industry involvement and readiness," said Meutya. The readiness of the Ministerial Regulation as the legal basis for the cheap internet program has also gone through industry consultation for more than a month. The operator selection process will begin this year with a transparent and accountable scheme, prioritizing technological readiness and a commitment to providing services at affordable prices.
