Indonesia And Norway Agree To Strengthen Cooperation To Address Climate Change

Wednesday, 07 May 2025

The Indonesian and Norwegian governments have agreed to strengthen environmental diplomacy and encourage real cooperation in climate change mitigation efforts, nature conservation, and sustainable development.

According to a statement received in Jakarta on Sunday, Minister of Environment (LH)/Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq inaugurated this when signing a letter of intent (LoI) with the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen during a visit to Oslo.

"It is important for us to increase the implementation of carbon economic value as part of Indonesia's efforts to achieve the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target, in accordance with the mandate of Presidential Regulation No. 98/2021. Together with Norway, Indonesia has developed a strong carbon trading system, which will support the achievement of national climate targets," said Hanif.

He explained that the signing of the LoI was a strategic step to accelerate global efforts to address climate change and encourage sustainable development, both in Indonesia and the world.

The LoI document itself includes the commitment of both countries to enhance cooperation in climate change mitigation and adaptation, good governance, biodiversity conservation, peatland and mangrove ecosystem preservation, waste management, and circular economy.

The signing not only reflects the urgency of global action, but also underlines Norway's vital role as a strategic partner for Indonesia in combating the increasingly pressing environmental crisis.

The Minister of Environment's visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Norway, which began in 1950, with a growing focus on cooperation in the environmental sector.

Since 2022, Norway has supported Indonesia in reducing carbon emissions from the forestry and land use (FOLU) sector, with a funding commitment of US$216 million (around Rp3.5 trillion).

In addition to meeting with the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, Minister Hanif also met with Andreas Motzfeld Kravik, State Secretary of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and visited the recycling company TOMRA to learn about innovations in waste management and the implementation of a circular economy.
