Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Dave Laksono, considers the 32 percent import tariff imposed by the United States on Indonesia to be quite concerning for the industrial and economic sectors of the country. "Certainly, this raises several worrying issues as it will undoubtedly affect our industry, impact our banking sector, and could also lead to changes in our economy," Dave stated at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday. He believes that the government must prepare the Indonesian economy to respond to the policy enacted by U.S. President Donald Trump. "Now, it is up to us to prepare the economic conditions of Indonesia and also to determine the steps that will be taken," he remarked. He also views that Indonesia still has the opportunity to continue negotiations on reciprocal tariffs with the U.S. "We are continuously lobbying, and we can create opportunities for renegotiation," he said. He added that there are many national needs that consist of original U.S. products, such as various main weapon system tools (alutsista). "Danantara has also discussed the potential for investment there to facilitate the production and procurement of our domestic goods from that location," he stated. Additionally, he assessed that President Prabowo Subianto has taken several steps to foster global economic cooperation in response to global dynamics, such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the economic bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS). "(The President) continues to open new market opportunities so that we are not entirely dependent on one side, but we can also enter new markets to develop our capacity," he remarked. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto is currently en route to the United States (US) to continue negotiations on the reciprocal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) Hasan Nasbi explained that after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto to the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Minister Airlangga is now traveling to Washington, D.C., United States, to discuss the continuation of the 32 percent import tariff policy against Indonesia. "The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs is on his way from Rio to DC. I contacted him earlier; he is currently traveling from Rio to DC," Hasan stated in a press release at the PCO Office in Jakarta on Tuesday.
