McDonald's Indonesia Is Rolling Out Innovations To Boost Its Commitment To Sustainable Development Goals

Saturday, 03 Aug 2024

McDonald's Indonesia, under the umbrella of PT Rekso Nasional Food, is continuously strengthening its commitment to implementing sustainability principles. This commitment is not only aimed at having a positive impact on the environment but also serves as McDonald's Indonesia's contribution to supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN) and in line with the Indonesian Government's agenda, which includes reducing plastic waste and achieving zero carbon emissions by 2060.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of goals established in 2015 to achieve a better and more sustainable life for everyone on this planet. Consisting of 17 goals, SDGs are intended to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.

McDonald's Indonesia has taken various concrete actions to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly goal number 12 on 'Responsible Consumption and Production' and goal number 13 on 'Climate Action', through operational systems, business scale, and collaborations with various parties.

Ronni Rombe, Director of Supply Chain & QA at PT Rekso Nasional Food, stated, "As an Indonesian company, PT Rekso Nasional has a great opportunity to make a real impact on sustainable development through our business operations. With over 300 McDonald's restaurants across Indonesia, tens of thousands of local employees, and dozens of local supplier partners, we believe that our efforts can make a positive contribution to supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. To have a greater impact, we invite everyone to contribute together for a better future and environment."

Regarding efforts to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 related to 'Responsible Consumption and Production', in line with the government's target to reduce plastic waste, McDonald's Indonesia has made significant policy changes.

The family fast-food restaurant, which has been operating for more than 30 years in Indonesia, has reduced the use of single-use plastic packaging and switched to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper packaging that is more environmentally friendly. For example, by reducing the use of plastic straws and replacing them with sealed packaging for takeout drinks (takeaway, Drive Thru, and delivery).

McDonald's Indonesia's steps to reduce plastic packaging use have been appreciated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia. In 2020, McDonald's Indonesia received an award for the category of producers who initiated waste reduction and had reduced plastic waste by 470 tons in 2019.

In addition to packaging, McDonald's Indonesia also shows its commitment to sustainable development through the selection of raw materials and waste management. One example is the use of certified palm oil in restaurants that meet environmental requirements.

The processing of used cooking oil is also a concern, by converting the used cooking oil into renewable energy sources (biodiesel) that are certified by the government, so as not to cause environmental pollution if disposed of or used as animal feed, let alone consumed by humans.

To support Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 related to 'Climate Action' and in line with the government's target of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2060, McDonald's Indonesia has implemented various environmentally friendly facilities and initiatives.
