McDonald’s Indonesia Invites Employees To Volunteer Alongside Friends With Disabilities

Wednesday, 25 Sep 2024

McDonald’s Indonesia, under PT Rekso Nasional Food, is all about making a positive impact on the community in a sustainable way. With their ‘Mekdi untuk Kemanusiaan’ initiative, they’re rolling out their annual Community Month program, which is all about giving employees the chance to volunteer together.

For a whole month, McDonald’s employees worldwide are getting involved in meaningful activities to reach out to different communities and provide the support they need. This year, over 250 employees in Indonesia participated, contributing a total of 130 hours to volunteer work, donating more than 5,800 meals, and connecting with over 65 beneficiary communities across the country.

The theme for this year’s volunteer efforts is ‘Embrace Diversity, Together We Empower,’ highlighting inclusion as a core value of the company. One of the main activities involved visiting the Panti Sosial Bina Netra and Rungu Wicara Cahaya Batin to share motivation and inspiration with hearing-impaired and visually impaired friends through fun and meaningful activities.

Yulianti Hadena, HR & GS Director of McDonald’s Indonesia, said, “McDonald’s Indonesia has been a fast-food restaurant that families in Indonesia can rely on for over 30 years. We strive not only to serve delicious and quality meals but also to uphold the value of inclusion for both our employees and customers. Through this year’s Community Month, we aim to create an inclusive space where everyone feels accepted, seen, and heard, regardless of their limitations.”

The activities at the Social Care Center for the Blind and Hearing Impaired, Cahaya Batin, are a great way for us to connect with the community and foster a sense of care and empathy among McDonald’s Indonesia employees.

During the Community Month event at the center, McDonald's Indonesia employees volunteered to engage in various fun activities with friends who have disabilities. The event kicked off with inspiring storytelling sessions led by volunteers, including some employees with disabilities who shared their determination to pursue their dreams despite challenges. The volunteers also entertained the children with enjoyable educational games designed to boost interaction and understanding among participants. The atmosphere was lively, especially with special performances from the visually impaired friends at Cahaya Batin, adding more energy and color to the event.

In addition to the Community Month program, McDonald’s Indonesia has long embraced the value of inclusion. A tangible expression of this commitment is the recruitment of individuals with special needs to work in the restaurants, known as special crew. McDonald's Indonesia has been hiring special crew members since 1995, focusing on local talent from the areas where the restaurants operate.

Currently, about 50% of McDonald's over 300 restaurants in Indonesia employ special crew members. To empower them, special crew members are trained in various skills within the restaurant, such as becoming a 'McD Chicken Specialist' or a barista.

Ucu Rahayu Lesmanawati, the head of the Social Care Center for the Blind and Hearing Impaired, expressed her appreciation for the volunteer activities organized by McDonald’s Indonesia.

We truly value McDonald’s Indonesia's initiative to involve the hearing and visually impaired in this social event.
